More than 200 students participate in the opening conference of the XXIX Scientific Conference of Badalona on AIDS dissemination and prevention

A talk by Alba Ruiz, a researcher at the Institute for AIDS Research IrsiCaixa , and a discussion on the ways of transmission of HIV / AIDS have triggered the Conference of Scientific Secondary Education of Badalona.

 

215 students from three schools in the city (Institut Pompeu Fabra, Escola Garbí Pere Verges and el Col·legi Badalonès) attended the meeting, which took place this morning in the auditorium of the University Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol.

 

For the fifth year in a row, IrsiCaixa collaborates with the XXIX Scientific Conference of Badalona offering students the opportunity to approach to the research of HIV / AIDS and work on its prevention. The event opened this morning the 29th edition of the Conference of Scientific Secondary Education of Badalona. The event took place at the Auditorium of the University Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol of Badalona, where over 200 students attended form the Institut Pompeu Fabra, Escola Garbí Pere Vergés and col·legi Badalonès.

The researcher Alba Ruiz has led the session, during which she has deepened about the difference between virus (HIV) and the disease it causes (AIDS), its origin and history, drug and vaccine research. Students also have assessed the degree of risk of HIV transmission by answering a questionnaire on transmission routes, as well as, participated in a debate on ethical issues. Finally, a person living with HIV explained his experience, and responded to the questions from students. The difficulties of following the treatment, the stigma surrounding HIV and related diseases have been topics that have interested students the most.

This event is part of the activities offered by the outreach program and AIDS prevention jointly developed by IrsiCaixa and Obra Social "la Caixa", which is aimed at high school students and vocational training. Its main objectives are to disseminate the basics of HIV/AIDS research in this field, to promote AIDS prevention and to awaken new scientific vocations. Besides, it is an education and outreach program that promotes the Unit of Public Engagement on Health Research of IrsiCaixa (see projects).

 


Conference of Scientific Secondary Education of Badalona

Since 2010 , the lecture-discussion led by IrsiCaixa marks the starting point of the Conference of Scientific Secondary Education of Badalona, which this year will be held on 17, 18 and 19 March 2015. These workshops consist on a public exhibition of research of several students from different schools in the city. They are organized by Àrea d’Educació, Esports i Joventut, Àrea de Medi Ambient i Sostenibilitat, Escola del Mar and Escola de Natura; the City Council of Badalona, Servei Educatiu Ciutat de Badalona and Generalitat de Catalunya.
