The "Institut de Recerca de la SIDA-Caixa, irsiCaixa" Foundation was established on January 12th, 1995 with the objectives of advocating, inspiring and spreading medical investigation on The Acquired Immune-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The irsiCaixa Foundation has its own juridical board and the complete capacity to proceed with its undertakings.

On March 6th, 1995 it was registered and classified as a charitable organization with scientific principles by the Department of Justice of the Generalitat of Catalonia and it is subjected to the legislation of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

The activity of the irsiCaixa Foundation is mainly carried out in the Retrovirology Laboratory of the University Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol in Badalona (Barcelona, Spain). It is a reference center for the research and treatment of AIDS in Catalonia. The laboratory director is Dr.Bonaventura Clotet, head of the AIDS unit of the University Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol.

The laboratory is financed in part thanks to the collaboration of "La Caixa Foundation" and the Department of Health in Catalonia. Other financial sources include grants, public donations to research projects and also from the pharmaceutical industry.
